... or lack thereof.
First, it is important to note that I am still depressed over FMA 41-42. I might go into that later.
But first, we saw the Yu-gi-oh movie this weekend. I ended up scoring the Sorcerer of Dark Magic and the Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon. I gave the blueeyes to Holly because she's more likely to acquire a BEUD than I am. Although as far as I can tell, it's not out yet. Holly got the Watapon and the Pyramid of Light, which has a completely different description than it did in the movie. OK, all the cards were slightly different than in the movie. Pegasus had a Toon Gemini Elf and a Toon Dark Magician Girl. I want those cards! Shut up. I like Toon World.
But, this is supposed to be about the movie. First, I must say, the dub is painful. They do such a good job with Pokemon, I guess they just accidentally miscast YGO. I used to be irritated by Joey's voice the most, but the more dub I see, the more I'm traumatized by YamiYuugi and Kaiba's voices. Kaiba - that's Brock, right? How is that the right voice for that character?! I am just not seeing it.
The first problem I had with the movie is this line: "Eternity doesn't last forever." Umm... ok are we all using the same Funk & Wagnall's here? They did do a good job of introducing the show concept, for people who have never seen it. What's really amusing to me is how many times Yugi yells "Pharaoh!", because, that's my cat's name. He was searching for my kitty.
Oh, I really should make mention of the inserted Americanized music. It stinks.
There are a lot of good one-liners. As always, Jou and Honda (Joey and Tristan) provide much amusement. Pegasus plays a pretty important role in the movie, which is cool, but ... I thought he died. Shows how close I was watchin. Personally, I was glad to see Pegasus, but there was no Bakura and only a passing glance of Malik. Passing glances of Weevil and Rex, who I can't recall their Japanese names, which is ironic considering there's no view whatsoever of Otogi, whose English name I can't recall. Weevil and Rex are hangin out, like, at the shopping center or something. Like they're
in love best friends or something. I wonder if they have matching rings that say BFF. Normally, this is where I would say 'they're gonna make out', but I am not at all convinced they are hott. ( So stop thinking about some kind of weird shipping, Val. For real. )
Back to the film. What happens is, Anubis gets out. Ok why does Anubis get such a bad rap? Anyway, again, in fiction, Anubis is evil. (Listen. Seth was a bit evil. Anubis was not. And why doesn't Thoth get any fiction time? Eh? Eh? Eh? ) So, Anubis gets out, and he has a pyramid thing, and he has a card of it, and he sneaks it into Pegasus's deck, and then Kaiba steals it. And then Kaiba uses it, with disastrous results, in an attempt to beat Yuugi's Egyptian God cards.
Luckily, in a stroke of deus-ex-machina, Pegasus figures out what is going on and comes to save Anzu and Jii-chan before Kaiba's duel-dome esplodes. Really rather a weak plot device, if you ask me. Or if you ask any analyst of modern fiction. His escuse for knowing what was going on? "I looked it up." Er... yeah. Google-search on "weird blue light coming from Kaiba's house, which I can't even see from my fantasy island."
Prominently figuring into the plot, once again, is the happy smiley that they had on their hands at the beginning of US Season 1, which is Season 2 really. What's up with that? How many times is that going to come up?
I'm not saying it was a bad movie, it was not bad in the way that Pokemon The First Movie was bad, and it certainly wasn't the dire offense to celluloid that the Digimon movie was. It's not a good movie, though. It seems like it was designed for non-fans of the show. Which, ok, sure, whatever. Like anyone in that theater wasn't a fan of the show already. I would have preferred if all the characters were involved. I don't think I'm the only one who feels that way. Made me wanna write a massive epic fanfic, but we all know how well that will turn out.
There are some good one-liners. Holly keeps asking if she can trade me her Watapon, and then that I'll play Watapon and Celtic Guardian, so she can say "A creampuff and an elf?!" There's a nice Kaiba line where he says to Pegasus "Do you ever shut up?" which I found amusing. The art is still good, unlike recent episodes in which everyone looks like they're in a funhouse mirror or something.
If you like the show, go see it. It's good fun. If you aren't a fan, you can skip it with no ill effects.
And we did watch 45 yesterday, yup yup.
I will say that I adore Dante's evil. That's some mad evil there. That's evil I can respect. I'm a bit jealous of how amazingly evil she is. And, I adore the Dante theme. Please please PLEASE release soundtrack #2 soon!! Oh yeah, I forgot, we prefer to call it an OST. Gimme! I hate when I want to purchase something and it doesn't exist yet! Gimme!! And thank you, FMA, for once again giving me a reason to watch next week, even though every time I think of the show I get sorely depressed because ... I don't wanna talk about it. I'll just get depressed. That and there's not much to say that I haven't already said, and there's really no point taking up more bandwidth saying the same things I said before. It's still depressing knowing that Kimberly won't be in any more episodes, unless I'm right about Hoenheim being his illigitimate father, in which case we'll get some kind of flashback, but screw, I don't even care anymore. I'll cry if they show some kind of flashback. I guess I'm lucky he's not featured in the OP for 9 eps after his demise, like Greed was. That was like rubbing salt in the wound. But see, if I was the writer, I'd have killed Greed. But not Kimberly. Or Archer, who may or may not be dead, but I don't even care anymore. All I care about now is mad evil, which is Dante. She really IS evil, whereas Kimberly was absolutely NOT evil. He just didn't give a fuck. Someone is flying sonic jets over my house, and it's pissing me off.
The point is, I don't know why I bring this show up anymore, because all it does is depress me. I'm going to bed now.
