I'd been wanting to try it, because Kite threatens people with it, but it's a popular f00d in Okinawa (I used to live there) and because it's described as "bitter" and I tend to love bitter foods.
And yeap, I luv goya. LOVE. Like this ♥

The most popular goya dish in Okinawa is Goya Champloo, so we got a recipe here (the 2nd recipe for it) and we MADE F00D. And photographed it for posterity!

Here it is! The infamous GOUYA! We drove all over town until we finally found one at the Asian market around the corner. (Yeah why dint we just go there first?! because it's hard to read the labels on stuff!)
They were labelled Bittermelon in english (and something else in chinese). There were two in a package. Here's one. I'm eating the other one now. I gave Heppy some, he tried it but then he made a funny face XD

Seriously - I love this f00d. See that bit in the lower left-hand corner? I ate that. Like it is. And then I kept lookin for more to eat randomly while cooking.
There's the inside of the goya. You gotta scoop out the seed pods. With a Hello Kitty spoon. (this is important!)

Start with tofu, (hard tofu) and cook that for a bit so it gets... cooked (normal people dont break up their tofu into ricotta cheez sized bits but I've never been accused of being normal) and then put goya and bonito flakes in there. Soy sauce to taste (you can see I spilled some). Then cook this. In a frying pan. For a few minutes til you think it looks done.

Then you EAT IT. We served it with rice because we luv rice. Kym decided she wasn't quite so keen on the goya, so I ate her goyas. This is a supremely divine f00d, but Kym sez goya tastes like you put that dont-bite-yer-nails stuff on a bell pepper. But, I think it is TEH WIMZ. Goya champloo is an AWESOME f00d. I wish you liked it, but since you think goya is icky, can I have yours?
(total cost: less than $5 for two servings like this and another couple of servings for tomoorow, total time... I'd say about 15 minutes including photographing, cep the rice took a little longer)

Bonito flakes are called KATSUO in Japanese (it looks like this かつお or カツオ) We found this at the Asian market but I'm pretty sure I've seen it at Tom Thumb (the fancy Tom Thumb). But you probably have to go to the asian market for goya anyway, so you might as well get yer tofu and bonito flakes while yer at the store (seriously - $5. Or less. I can't remember exactly but my total was $6 and I also bought two canned beverages).
If you already know you don't like goya, try this kind of dish with some other bold vegetable that you DO like. Personally I think the combination of bonito and goya is an outrageously perfect mix of flavors. I'm in love with this f00d! And it was SO EASY to make! I luv goya like I luv Sanada and Renji and Yuushi. I understand why Kite wants everyone to eat one. I feel sorry for Hirakoba for hating it.

Next up: Goya juice!
I'm not insanedrop trou!

That actually looks so good! Well, since I love tofu and haven't eaten anything but bread for 2 days...

I'm gonna try this once I get my own apartment! I must conquer my fear of gouya! :D

Tofu is one of my other favorite foods, and rice, so this is just a really excellent recipe, and it's SO easy. I'm a complete disaster when it comes to cooking, and look, I made f00d and then actually ate it and LIKED it!
I hope you like gouya, because ... it is LOVE ;D

My grandmother actually makes something like this. I never bothered to try it, though.

When I first tried goya, I actually got sick from it. But then again, I was 10 at the time.

Man, that's hardcore. I let Holly try some (she's 10) and she just made the bitter face and said she would eat it if she was starving XD

Another recipe for that dish includes tuna and an egg, and it doesn't HAVE to include gouya, but I think it's REALLY REALLY REALLY GOOD with it in there!
