Dave the Barbarian, new show on Disney channel, is quite a bit funnier than we expected it to be. I'm not sure if it will become part of my regular diet, but it's well worth checking out if you haven't seen it yet. The animation is kinda choppy, like Nickelodeon, but that's wayyyyy better than that overanimated crap that Disney gives us in the movies.

FLCL. So, listen. Whenever I posted in a comm that FLCL is better than Bebop (as a matter of fact I do feel like a traitor when I say that) I got a lot of comments like "FLCL is fluff! There's no substance! It's only good for a laugh! It's so funny!"
And sure, it is funny. But it's not a comedy. At least, I don't see it that way. In fact, it's as much a comedy as Bebop is a comedy. It's so fast-paced, and so surreal, and maybe those two things combined rest in some people's minds as comedic. I think of it as some kind of action show. Not even an action comedy. In fact, (oh I'm about to feel that guilt again*) I would say FLCL is a genre in itself. I can't quite classify what it is, but I can certainly classify what it isn't. It ain't a comedy. It ain't a romantic comedy. It's upbeat and not depressing, does that equal comedy in the modern world? (OK I recognize that might equal comedy in the ancient Greek world.) If those two things are what is required for a show to be considered a comedy, then I suppose Wizard of Oz is a comedy.
Maybe I'm way off base, and it really is a comedy. Maybe I just see the action and drama elements because all but the basest comedy eludes me (Naota coming out of Canti as a big turd, stuff like that). Or, maybe I see something the casual viewer doesn't see. Maybe it's one of those things, like Dali, you either "get it" or you don't. And if you don't, it just appears to be random comedic elements strung together with breathtaking animation and a stellar soundtrack.
Maybe it's just that in my mind it's too good and perfect to be a comedy. Maybe I'm biased in odd ways. Who knows.

* "The work which becomes a genre itself will be called Cowboy Bebop" -- forgot what ep that is. Jupiter Jazz I think.
I'm not insanedrop trou!
