I should have made a R&S icon, huh. I will later.

I accidentally bought the Ren & Stimpy DVDs yesterday. That show makes me happy. It's weird, and gross, and funny, and set to a soundtrack of some of the most beautiful music ever written. That makes it more surreal. I don't have any memories associated with it, because I didn't have cable in the early 90s so I never saw it at all until about 3 years ago when I got the Nicktoons channel. But I knew when it was originally airing that it was groundbreaking, because people do talk.

I watched one of the interviews with John K on the disk, and despite being rather arrogant and a little short-sighted (that's my opinion) he really is a genius. And I did admire his tell-it-like-it-is attitude, he didn't mince words or try to be polite, because by God it's his friggin video. One of the things he said that he was really trying to do with the characters was give them such strong personalities that you could put them in any situation and make it funny. And that really is why it worked. The jokes are amusing and the art has a subtlety to it that makes it interesting despite not being 'cute', but the true brilliance is in the characterization. And there really are some of the greatest facial expressions ever seen in cartoon form. So even though it was a groundbreaking series doing things that had never been done, what really makes it one of the best series of the modern era is the return to a focus on character. There's elements of what made Looney Tunes great mixed with modern elements, and the combination redefined the American animation industry.

One criticism of this 'boxed set' that I have is that every single Ren & Stimpy cartoon is not included. I'm not sure if this is only the John K ones, or if this is just season 1 & 2 or what, but there are some episodes I really would have liked to have seen that aren't included. Yes yes John K didn't have a vision for the other episodes because he wasn't involved, but I've seen those episodes and I like some of them.
